In brief

10th annual park clean-up

FLINT TWP. — The 10th annual Township Park Clean-up and Beautification will be held from 10-11 a.m. May 5 at the Flint Township Park, 5200 Norko Drive. It is being held in memory of Dr. Peter Mikelens, clean-up project leader, for the past nine years, who died last August. This year’s event is being scaled back to only picking up litter instead of the planting and pruning that took place in past years. As always, the public is invited to attend. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and trash bags. A short memorial program will highlight a Monarch Way Station Sign to be placed in the butterfly garden that Mikelens created at the park. The clean-up will be followed by a nature walk around the park - another tradition led each year by Mikelens who was very knowledgeable about plants and wildlife. The event this year is spearheaded by Mikelens widow - Millie Wint. — R.S.
