FLINT TWP. — Jack Fick Excavating of Flint Township was the low bidder and has been awarded the contract for repairs at the Senior Center.

Fick was one of two bidders on the project though bids were widely solicited, said Mike Pifer, of Kraft Engineering and Surveying, which wrote the engineering specifications for the project. The other bid was from Diamond Excavating of Davison.

Fick’s bid of $53,591 was accepted for the three-part project. Part one is to build a drain around the perimeter of the west side of the building which houses the senior center and a branch of the Genesee District Library. The repair is needed to stop water from leaking into the building.

Part two is to repair a sanitary sewer line that has been causing bathroom backups, Pifer said. A camera run through the drain pipe discovered that about a 100-foot section has settled which is causing the backups.

Part three is to relocate the garbage dumpster so that the heavy trucks can access it without driving through the parking lot causing it to crack.

Plans are pending to repair the parking lot in the near future.

Pifer said that the bid quotes came in higher than expected but is consistent with industry trends. The county lost a lot of contractors during the 2008 construction downturn and those still in business are very busy, he said.

Township Supervisor said that paying for the project requires budget amendments. She said that $32,000 is budgeted for repair and maintenance and the library but none for the senior center.

Also part of the funds budgeted for the library are reserved to pay 40 percent of the cost of repairing the parking lot. The rest of that project will be paid with anticipated federal funds which caps spending at 60 percent of costs.

The board agreed to amend the sewer and water budget to approve payment for $10,880 for the cost of the sewer line repair.

The balance of the cost - $42,711 -will use $11,346 of the budgeted library money and $32,365 from the general fund.

Problems at the center arose last summer last summer including mold issues and flooding of the library caused by poor drainage.

Dumpster work will include adding an enclosure.

Pifer said that once started the entire project should take about two weeks to complete.
