FLINT TWP. — The township board approved the disbursement of $10,000 in public, educational, or governmental (PEG) funds for use by three local school districts.

Carman-Ainsworth Schools will receive $5,000 and Swartz Creek Schools and Flushing Schools will each receive $2,500. PEG funds, which come from cable fees, are paid out to the school a couple of times each school year.

The schools use the funds to help pay for broadcasting related courses. The submit quarterly reports on how the money is being spent.

C-A middle school students have a class called Advanced Computers (CAMS News Network) in which they create a weekly news show broadcast building wide.

This year they used PEG funds to purchase a new HD Tricaster, a portable broadcast unit, that helps them make their broadcasts look more professional, said Mike Warren, instructor.

They also purchased some equipment to enable older video cameras to work with the Tricaster. The expense used all PEG funds for this year. Three students currently are being trained to use the Tricaster. There are 28 students enrolled in the course, Warren said.

Similarly, Swartz Creek uses PEG funds to produce In the News, a daily new program featuring school events, news and more, said Ben Gillett, video communications instructor.

SC also added a new course this year called Media and Marketing and expanded the program to add the Yearbook class. Currently about 130 students are enrolled in the program.

SW also has a self-help fundraising program in which they sell popcorn on Fridays and a partnership with the Coffee Beanery through which they have raised more than $6000 so far this school term. The funds are used to purchase additional equipment.
