GISD to open new facility in Flint Township

FLINT TWP. — The Genesee Intermediate School District recently purchased the former headquarters of Diplomat Pharmacy, at the corner of Corunna and Dye roads to house some of its programs.

Richard Hill, GISD board member, said the new building will house the GISD’s Early Childhood staff.

At 24,000-square-feet, the building will serve as home to several GISD programs currently housed at the Erwin L. Davis Center, 2413 W. Maple Rd.

Hill described the use of this building as a “domino effect” with Special Education moving there too, making room for the technology staff, EduPass and the Innovative Educator staff at the Davis Center. The Flint Township facility will open in the fall of 2019.

GISD Board member Larry Ford said the GISD is building a field house, which they hope to open next fall. In the field house there will be a shooting range for the ROTC, as well as a weight room and all things associated with building one’s own personal body, as well as building the teamwork that goes into the close quarter drill.

Other things happening at the GISD include:

The Genesee County Career and Technical Education Early Middle College – the GISD’s three-year middle college program is expanding, adding marketing and accounting. Local districts like Carman-Ainsworth — keep their foundation dollars for those students who attend.

Happiness Advantage Orange Frog training – The GISD has trained 2,500 people to use positivity to improve culture and to be a happier person. –

Aviation program – An aviation program for young people is coming to the GISD next fall, said Ford.

Those who go through that program are on track to become pilots, aviation designers, to do maintenance work and to become air traffic controllers.

“This is another program that gives students a good taste of what they’re in for if they pursue that career,” said Hill. “How they might go through that program and become a professional aviator.”

New facilities – In addition to a fieldhouse for the ROTC, the GISD also has a new culinary facility that opened recently called Bistro 5081. Ford called them: “State-of-the-art cooking facilities.”
