Summer concert series returns to Genesee Valley Center


FLINT TWP. — Genesee Valley Center’s free summer concert series returns for another season on June 6.

Concerts are held in the center’s Outdoor Village area, between Bar Louie and Barnes & Noble every Thursday night in June, July and August. Each evening starts at 6:30 p.m. with Sounds by DJ Psycho. The live band plays at 7 p.m., with DJ Psycho playing out the night after the live band finishes.

Limited seating is available, and concertgoers can bring lawn chairs. There will be no concert on the Fourth of July. The concert schedule follows:

June 6: Magic Bus – Bringing the songs, the look and the feel of the Woodstock era, including music from such iconic performers as Small Faces, Jefferson Airplane, Grass Roots, Three Dog Night, the Who, Janis Joplin and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Magic Bus was the Outstanding Tribute Band winner at the 2018 Detroit Music Awards.

June 13: High Definition — This band of brothers based out of Flint grew up making music together. Now, they blend R&B, jazz and soul music into a modern, high-energy performance.

June 20: Forq – An instrumental quartet with a penchant for sonic exploration. The group is made up of world-class improvisers, but it is its unusual genre-blending songs that leave a lasting impression. The band has performed in 14 countries throughout the world and traveled as far as China and Australia.

June 27: The 4Korners — An original instrumental music band playing jazz fusion, though they prefer to call their sounds “journey music.” July 11: Mama Sol — MamaSol is a writer who uses her gift to uplift and motivate.

She is committed to breaking the cycle of mainstream hip-hop and envisions a world that prioritizes education, responsibility and art.

July 18: Maurice Davis — Maurice Davis of Flint is a performer and recording artist who headlines concerts and outdoor festivals throughout Michigan. His mastery of singing and playing the blue has earned him the title “King of Party Blues”.

July 25: Geneva Tone — Flint native Latonya Geneva Givens is a name some may know. She has written for Erykah Badu, Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg. Her work with Terrace Martin earned her a Soul Train nomination for Best Independent R&B/Soul Performance in 2014for “You’re the One” and a Grammy nod in 2016 for Martin’s album titled “Velvet Portraits.” “Push,” written by Givens and produced by Martin and Robert “Sput” Seawright can be heard on the soundtrack for the HBO show “Ballers,” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Aug. 1: An Evening of Worship Music with various performers — This will be a night where people come to praise and worship together.

Aug. 8: The Daniel Witherspoon Project — Grammy Award-winning producer Daniel Weatherspoon, whose clients include Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Carl Thomas and Bebe & Cece Winans, performs music from his No. 1 Billboard jazz debut album, “The Langley Park Project,” and his upcoming album “Journey” to be released this summer.

Aug. 15: Katrina Storm — Singer, actress, songwriter and entertainer Storm has toured nationwide in dramatic plays and concerts. She is known for her energized improv intimate performances.

Aug. 22: Ghost Note — Ghost-Note’s live performances are bold and in your face, focusing on creating seductive danceable grooves and a contagious feel-good energy. Each show is an opportunity to let loose and connect, for both fans and the musicians alike.

Aug. 29: Have a Cigar — Have a Cigar Pink Floyd experience inspires nostalgia with tight harmonies and musicianship. Some of the finest native Michigan musicians pay homage to one of the great bands of our time. — J.J.
