A dignified way

Every year on Flag Day, the Swartz Creek American Legion Post 294 conducts a flag retirement ceremony. Throughout the year, Legion members accept worn flags. This year, about 50 flags were retired. According to Title 4 Section 8k of the United States Flag Code, flags should be retired when they are in “such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display.” Flags must be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning, the Code states. As part of the ceremony, Legion members salute the flags one final time.
