FLINT TWP. — Mittens, hats and scarves decorating a special tree at the back of the township hall meeting room are being collected for needy children at Carman-Ainsworth schools. Organized by the Flint Township Clerical Union, AFSCME 1918-01, this is the second year for the Mitten Tree donation drive, said a township clerical employee.
However, it is the third year that the union has been involved in donating hats, scarves and mittens to schools. Some of the items are handmade.
Most of the knitting is done by two volunteers — Doreen West, a retired township employee, who knits the scarves and Sharon Munson, who knits the hats. Both use donated yarn.
The annual Mitten Tree drive is coordinated by Rose Shifflett, a clerical union member.
Donations for the tree are being accepted at the township hall until Dec. 20 when the heart-, fingers- and head-warming gifts will be delivered to the C-A administration building for distribution to the children.
