I greatly appreciate the Detroit Tigers reading my column last week. I ripped them for losing 20 straight times to the Cleveland Indians. Wholly by golly the Tigers took two of three games from Cleveland over the weekend. I say way to go Tigs!
I was impressed with Sunday’s game and the pitching of Tarik Skubal and Daniel Norris. The two pitchers combined on a one hitter for six innings. The start by Skubal was just his second big league start. I thought the left hander looked really good. If he can keep it up it will help this sorry pitching staff the Tigers have. I have been so disappointed in Daniel Norris over the past few years. However, this season he has a solid 2.77 ERA.
I was also lucky to witness Casey Mize take the hill against the Chicago White Sox. Casey struck out seven over four and a third innings. I loved the stuff Casey was dealing to the dish. Casey Mize will be an All Star here real quickly — trust me on that. Casey Mize will make his second start this week against the Chicago Cubs.
It’s so tough to watch Miguel Cabrera struggle at the plate and then realize he has three more years on his huge contract. I believe it’s going to get uglier and uglier for Miggy as his swing looks so slow now. The Tigers sit six and half games behind the Minnesota Twins in American League Central with a 11-15 record.
The NHL is down to eight teams left in the playoffs all looking to hoist the Stanley Cup.
The Eastern Conference has the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightening skating with one another. I think this series has all the ice chips of going seven games. I think these two teams are dead even talent wise. I also believe whoever wins this series will represent the Eastern Conference in the Cup Finals. The crystal cheese ball says: Thunder and Lightening will advance.
The other Eastern Conference matchup features Philadelphia and the New York Islanders. The Islanders won all three regular season games against the Flyers. It almost makes me want to pick the Islanders, but I think Philadelphia is the better hockey club. The crystal cheeseball says: Philly Cheese Steaks in six.
The Western Conference has the upstart Vancouver Canucks skating with the Vegas Golden Knights.
The fat guy is taking an upset here as I think Vancouver is going to shock the boys from Vegas. The Canucks disposed the defending champion St. Louis Blues and that impressed me. The crystal cheeseball says: Vegas, but I’m over ruling the cheese and taking Vancouver!
The Colorado and Dallas series is a contrast in styles on the ice. The Colorado Avalanche are offensive minded and the Dallas Stars defensive minded. The Dallas Stars won all four matchups in the regular season. The Stars won game one 5-3 the other night. The crystal cheeseball says: Colorado in a tough seven game series. Let’s drop the puck baby and play some hockey!
The NBA is still in round one of their playoffs so we will look at that next week. I will say Toronto won in four straight over New Jersey. The Boston Celtics will dispose of the Philadelphia team. The Miami Heat crushed the Indiana Pacers. These three series were non-competitive to say the least.
The NFL should be in pre-season mode and it seems strange there are no games. News in the NFL training camps has been quiet so far. I attribute that to the other three sports going on right now, putting the NFL on the back burner. I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
