FLINT — Operating on the philosophy that “It’s Never Too Late” to earn your high school diploma or equivalency and that education is “The Key To Your Future,” Academy West has helped more than 175 adults complete their high school diploma or equivalency (GED) since the 2015-16 school year.

Academy West is a free program open to registered students that are 22 years old or older. The goal of the program is simple: help students improve their skills, get better jobs, increase their income and/ or go to college or a trade school.

There are two paths students can choose within the program. The High School Diploma Program is a self-paced program through which students complete the requirements for a high school diploma by completing online based classes. Students must be self-motivated and learn independently to be successful in this program. The time it takes to earn a diploma varies from student to student depending on the student skill level, motivation, time commitment and prior credits earned.

Another option for students at Academy West is the GED program. The GED test measures a student’s educational level in four core subjects in a computer-based assessment. A student who successfully obtains the GED test credential has displayed the same general level of academic achievement as the typical student who graduated from high school. Most employers and colleges accept the GED as an equivalent to a high school diploma.

All classes are online based using the Edmentum PLATO Courseware. This courseware can be accessed 24/7.

The team at Academy West understands that transportation is often one of the biggest barriers for adult learners. In turn, their program is located on the MTA bus line with the Crosstown North bus stopping right in front of the building. Free bus passes and gas cards are available to eligible students.

Since its start, Academy West has consistently exceeded the state performance targets set for all adult education programs. Even more important, past program graduates have moved on to many different postsecondary and employment opportunities.

Graduates have continued their education at Mott Community College studying programs such as early childhood development, culinary arts, cosmetology, business management, and more. Other graduates have also moved on to careers in health care, truck driving, personal training, railroad safety and more.

The educators at Academy West firmly believe that students learn best when they feel comfortable and safe. This is especially true of adult learners. With this in mind, they work hard to create a family-like atmosphere within which all learners feel “at home” and are comfortable enough to take charge of their own learning. When students have this sense of comfort, they are more likely to ask questions, stay engaged, and stay committed. For more info call 810-591-4634.
