AFSCME preparing for Hat, Scarf, Mitten Tree

FLINT TWP. — The AFSCME Local 1918-01 annual Hat, Scarf and Mitten Tree is warming up to a new name honoring a woman who created thousands of items to fill the tree.

Sharon Munson knitted hats, scarves and mittens ever since her best friend, Rose Shifflett, began working on the tree more than 10 years ago. The items she created were given to children attending Carman-Ainsworth. Swartz Creek and Flushing schools.

Sadly, Munson passed away on Aug. 8. To honor her efforts, the AFSCME Local 1918-01 Hat, Scarf and Mitten Tree will now be known as the “Sharon the Warmth” Giving Tree.

With Munson’s passing, volunteers are needed to crochet or knit hats, scarves and mittens. Yarn will be provided to anyone who wants to participate. Donations of new hats, scarves and mittens as well as monetary donations to purchase yarn or ready-made items also will be accepted
