FLINT TWP. — Amendments to sewer and water rate ordinances passed second reading and adoption in a 4-2 vote at the township board’s May 5 meeting. Trustees Belenda Parker and Barb Vert voted no. Treasurer Marsha Binelli was absent.
Tracey Tucker, deputy treasurer, explained that a wording change was needed in the ordinances to make it clear that the board has no say in rate increases by the Genesee County Water and Waste Division. The new ordinance language was written by the township attorney, she said.
Clerk Kim Courts added that the township board would have to pick up the tab if it chose not to pass-through county rate increases.
“We don’t have deep pockets,’’ she said.
Even if all township board members voted against the rate increases, the township still would be billed for then, Supervisor Karyn Miller said.
The approved amendments are to Chapter 16 — Utilities. Specifically, the changes pertain to water supply charges and sewer rate computation. Full text of township ordinances is posted on its web site under ordinances.
The amendments become effective seven days after approval.
