Annual building report charts growth

FLINT TWP. — Growth is ongoing in the township as shown by the $20.9 million value of building permits pulled in the township in 2015, according to an annual building department report provided by Tracey Tucker, who heads the township building department and also is director of economic enhancement.

The permit value total is up from $15.3 million in 2014 and shows positive reinvestment in the good of the community, Tucker said.

The total include permits for 13 new residential, valued at about $3 million, and 13 new commercial valued at $4.3 million. Fees amounted to $25,240 for new residential permits and $33,577 for new commercial. Both were up from 2014 totals of four residential permits and nine in new commercial.

The category also includes permits pulled for manufactured homes (10), roofing (54), signage (55), residential alterations (44) valued at $1.6 million and commercial additions (52) valued at about $10 million.

Trade reports included nine for sewers, 351 for mechanical,117 for plumbing, 246 for electrical and 37 for zoning compliance, resulting in fees totaling $313,000.

Code enforcement of 1,490 complaints (not including rental inspections) were down from 1,635 in 2014. Of the total, 1,364 were closed and 126 remain open.

Licensing fees totaled $72,920 increased slightly from $70,510 in 2014. Fees included $55,420 for business licenses, $5,400 for liquor licenses, $300 for dance permits, $700 for entertainment permits and $9,200 for abandoned property registration.

The building department came in under its $403,996 budget with actual costs totaling $390,500.

Tucker also reported that Community Development Block Grant Funds were used to tear down six blighted homes in four neighborhoods.

The homes were beyond repair and negatively impacting neighboring houses. CDBG funding is essential to maintaining stable, safe neighborhoods, Tucker said. Demolishing blighted homes is a continual effort.

Homes demolished were located at 3365 Emerson St., 3034 Hatherly Ave., 3038 Hatherly, 3213 Hatherly, 3109 Hatherly, 2256 Nerredia St, 2625 Thornton Ave. and 2040 Noble Ave.
