Are you ready for some hockey? Wings kick off season tonight

Fat Guy Corner

The NHL season for our winged wheel Detroit Red Wings begins tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. It is a home opener at Little Caesars Arena. I hope the building has some fans sitting in the seats! The place always looks half empty and that’s because it usually is.

What can we expect on the ice here in 2018/19? If you believe the hockey experts, the answer is a very long year in Hockeytown. This Red Wings team is a team trapped between a youth movement and horrible contracts on some aging veterans. The Red Wings are committed to youth and a rebuilding process. I don’t see a .500 hockey club and there is zero chance they make a playoff run. The good news is, they cannot disappoint me or Red Wing fans by missing the postseason for the third year in a row. I do want to see improvement and effort as the season goes along, though. The team’s power play and penalty kill was horrible last season and needs to be better. The goaltending duties will be Jimmy Howard once again. Is it possible that this is his 12th year as a Red Wing? Man, that is hard to believe! The play of Anthony Mantha, Dylan Larkin, and Andreas Athanasiou needs to be elevated if the Wings are to improve!

The blueline is a veteran crew and Jimmy Howard will appreciate that. The bottom line is, NHL hockey is back and I still love my Detroit Red Wings!

No words for Lions’ debacle

The Lions disgust me, so I refuse to comment this week on them! I would be cursing in a family paper.

Wolverines dig out of hole

The Michigan Wolverines rallied to beat the Northwestern Wildcats last weekend. The Maize and Blue dug themselves into a 17-0 hole and Northwestern was thinking upset special. The running of Karan Higdon’s 115 yards and two touchdowns were much needed. My man had to be tired as he toted the rock 30 times in the football game.

The Michigan defense shut out the Wildcats in the second half. The comefrom behind win kept the Michigan Big Ten championship hopes alive. The Wolverines will be at home Saturday at high noon to face the turtles of Maryland. I see a large Michigan win in this contest.

Spartans should roll Northwestern

The Michigan State Spartans defeated Central Michigan 31-20 Saturday, as quarterback Brian Lewerke ran for two touchdowns. The Spartans started off sluggish and actually had a 31-3 lead before the CMU team scored some late points. The Green and White will host the Northwestern Wildcats at high noon Saturday. The Spartans should handle a deflated Northwestern Wildcats team that lost a game it should have won. I really like the Spartans to win this game, and win easily. The Spartans roll by 17 points. How about the Ohio State and Penn State game? I thought it was the best game of the college football season so far! The game had a little bit of everything! The last play call by Penn State on fourth down is the worst call I have seen in a while. The Ohio State Buckeyes, love them or hate them (hate), always seem to find a way to win. I still say, great game to watch!

Missed opportunity for U.S.

The Ryder Cup was a debacle once again for the United States golf team as it lost to Europe!
