FLINT TWP. — Several houses in the township have a date with the wrecking ball but first they need asbestos removal.
Because the $12,170 task will be paid with federal Community Development Block Grant funds, it required approval by the township board of a contract for Construction Services.
Qualified Abatement Services Inc. of Detroit was the low-bidder to handle removing asbestos from the demolition projects in the township.
The contract spells out the scope of the work including requiring the contractor to obtain necessary permits. Federal grant compliance also stipulates contractual obligations including meeting Equal Employment Opportunity, Clean Air Act, Wetlands Protection and other accessibility guidelines.
Tracey Tucker, township building director, said it is a standard contract required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Asbestos is a fibrous material with potential to cause lung cancer, scarred lung tissue, respiratory problems and related deaths. It is usually found in homes and buildings constructed before 1980. Removal can be expensive and must be done by trained professionals.
Affected township properties and estimated abatement costs are:

*3038 Hatherly Avenue, $4,550.00
