Ascension Genesys doctor promotes exercise with Walk with a Doc program

GRAND BLANC TWP. — For the second year in a row, Dr. Lyndsi Davenport is encouraging Genesee County residents to take a step toward better health with Walk with a Doc, a health program that brings doctors and patients together to walk twice per month; Wednesdays in Grand Blanc and Saturdays in Downtown Flint.

The 2019 Walk will kick off on May 15.

Walk with a Doc is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in order to improve the health and well-being of the country.

“This program has had tremendous participation and success in hundreds of cities around the country,” said Davenport. “I’m very pleased to bring this exciting and simple program to Flint as it has shown such improved health results for countless people around the country.”

The Walk is open to the community. Participation is free and pre-registration is not required. Walkers will enjoy a refreshing and rejuvenating walk with Davenport and other healthcare professionals, who will provide support to participants and answer questions during the Walk.

Both Walks will be approximately one mile long.

Those wishing to join her at the Grand Blanc Walks should meet outside of the Ascension Genesys Athletic Club at 5:30 p.m. and the Downtown Flint Walk group will meet at the University Pavilion on the corner of Saginaw Street and Kearsley Street at 10 a.m.

Walk with a Doc started with a cardiologist in Ohio who was frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting. He invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move.

Why walk? “There’s no question that increasing exercise, even moderately, reduces the risks of many diseases, including coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes,” said Davenport. “Research has even shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour that you exercise regularly.”

Davenport and the physicians at Ascension Genesys Downtown Flint Health Center provide primary care for the entire family. She is accepting new patients. To schedule an appointment, call 810-232-3522. Genesys Downtown Flint Health Center is located at 420 S. Saginaw Street, Flint. — G.G.
