The major league baseball season is winding down and October playoff baseball is creeping up fast. Let’s look at who the playoff teams are and some contenders trying to get in.
The American League has two division winners in Cleveland and Houston. The Boston Red Sox are up three games on the New York Yankees. I like the Red Sox to take this division. The wildcard picture has the Yankees making it for sure. The other spot will come down to the Minnesota Twins or L.A. Angels. Who had the Twins in the playoff race back in April? Nobody. I am pulling for the Twins and I like Joe Mauer for staying in Minnesota.
The win streak by the Cleveland Indians was a thing of beauty. It’s almost freaky to think about winning 22-straight baseball games. The National League’s two division winners are the Dodgers and Nationals. The Cubs are up four games on Milwaukee and will win the division. The World Series champs are starting to play good baseball. The one wildcard spot will go to the Arizona Diamondbacks. It will be fun to watch JD Martinez in the playoffs. I believe the Colorado Rockies will win the other spot. The Brewers and Cardinals will be in the mix but will fall short. I am anxiously waiting for October baseball and also anxiously awaiting for Brad Ausmus to be relieved of his managing duties.
College gridiron match-ups
Michigan State and the Fighting Irish will hook up in East Lansing Saturday at 8 p.m. on FOX. The last eight meetings have seen a 4-4 split in some very competitive football games. Who can forget the 2010 “Little Giants” overtime game-winning fake field goal call by MSU coach Mark Dantonio? It was a 34-31 winner for Sparty! I remember it like it was yesterday. The cheeseball prediction for this game sees a close low-scoring grudge match. Spartans 20, Irish 16.
The Wolverines will head down to play a much improved Purdue Boilermaker team at 4 p.m. also on FOX. Michigan struggled offensively again against Air Force coming away with a 29-13 victory. How about Air Force only throwing nine passes and completing only one? That’s insane in today’s college football. The big news is the cracked foot of Michigan receiver, Tarik Black, who will need surgery. I think Michigan might have Tarik do a medical red shirt, which he is eligible to do because he played in only three games. Cheeseball prediction: Michigan 33, Purdue 24.
The Detroit Lions won a road game in prime time? A Lions road win on Monday Night Football? The new road uniforms looked awesome and so did the 24-10 victory. The Lions rushed the football and the defense was really good. Hey, I realize the Giants are no offensive juggernaut by any stretch of the imagination. I give credit where credit is due. That Ziggy had three sacks on the night after having just two all last season is impressive. The play of No. 9 under center was tremendous and he only threw the ball around 20 times. The fantasy football players were probably not happy, but I am. The bottom line is, the Motor City Kittys are 2-0 and have a home game with the high-flying Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons have numerous weapons and are a tough match-up for any NFL team. The Lions’ defense will be severely tested by quarterback Matt Ryan. The Motor City will be rocking and Ford Field will be loud and raucous. A Lions’ win over the Dirty Birds and the City of Detroit will have Lions fever! I am smelling a Lions win in a shootout next Sunday. Cheeseball: I caught a fever 38 and Bird Take a Bath 34.
