BEST seeks applicants for institute

FLINT — The BEST Project, a program of the United Way of Genesee County, is currently accepting applicants for its BEST Nonprofit Leadership Institute.

Now in its second year, the comprehensive program is designed for individuals who want to develop their professional leadership skills and give back to the community through the nonprofit sector.

As part of the program, participants will receive an in-depth leadership analysis, individualized coaching, advanced nonprofit education, and peer networking opportunities. The program runs from December 2012 through December 2013.

“The BEST Nonprofit Leadership Institute is a unique opportunity for individuals to reinforce passion for a cause with relevant knowledge— equipping them for long-term, effective leadership in the nonprofit sector,” explained Jenni Dones, BEST Project program associate. “We’re looking for individuals who can demonstrate an openness to change, a passion for the nonprofit sector, and an affinity for lifelong learning and professional growth.”

Nonprofit organizations do vital work in Flint and Genesee County and employ nearly 15 percent of the local workforce. Their achievements can be credited to the passionate, dedicated, competent people who understand how to lead and motivate those involved in nonprofit organizations.

The BEST Project has supported nonprofit organizations and their leaders for nearly ten years through a variety of activities aimed at building excellence, sustainability and trust within the sector.

“After only one session with my coach, I could tell that I would benefit from the opportunity,” said program alumni Mona Sahouri, executive director of the Arab American Heritage Council. “The program allowed me to focus on my strengths as an executive director and critique my own leadership style. I have made several observations and adjustments accordingly. Nonprofit organizations will not be able to step up to the plate if we don’t develop the leadership.”

To apply, individuals must meet the following eligibility criteria: at least two years of experience in the nonprofit sector (staff, key volunteer, active board member); current direct involvement (paid or unpaid) with one or more nonprofits; and, must be a Genesee County resident or work with a Genesee County nonprofit.
