Big, small news in NFL

Fat Guy Corner

The NFL training camps are all about coming out of them healthy and ready to go for the regular season. I said last week in my column that I hope the Lions can avoid serious injuries. The Miami Dolphins took the first big hit on the injury front. The Dolphins starting quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, suffered an injury. The injury was not even a contact injury. Ryan was on a quarterback gallop to the right side and he pulled up with a knee injury. This Miami team won 10 football games last season so they figured to be in the hunt playoff-wise again in 2017.

Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase reached out to Jay Cutler to gauge his interest in playing football. Jay was headed to the FOX analyst booth here in 2017. The 34-year-old ex-Chicago Bears’ quarterback was coaxed back onto the gridiron by his old 2015 offensive coordinator, Gase.

Jay Cutler had his best-ever quarterback rating back in 2015 when his offensive coordinator was Gase. Jay signed a one-year $10 million deal with incentives. I know it seems like a lot of money, but it’s probably the lowest amount Jay has ever played for. The fact Jay Cutler is 51-51 as a starter in the NFL isn’t great, but not horrible either. I think the Miami team received an upgrade with Cutler over Tannehill. I know many fans question his toughness, attitude, and demeanor on the field. I will say he takes a bad rap on lots of these type of statements. Jay Cutler has a strong arm and lots of NFL experience.

My concerns, if I was the Dolphins, is he in playing shape? I would also be concerned about a divided locker room for those who think Matt Moore should get the chance to be the starting quarterback. My response to that is most teams need two healthy legitimate quarterbacks on their rosters because hardly any of the starters make it the whole season.

The Detroit Lions have been lucky with Matthew Stafford recently. Let’s see how the Cutler deal pans out here in 2017. I give it a thumbs up!

Vince Wilfork announced his retirement from the NFL. I loved big Vince. What an athlete for his 325 pound body (I am being kind at 325, too). He was a great run-stopper and plugged up the line of scrimmage in the running game. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2004 at No. 21 overall from Miami, Florida. Enjoy retirement big Vince; I enjoyed watching you play in the 18 NFL.

Career slam on the line

The PGA Golf Tour has a big weekend on tap with the 99th PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. The tournament could produce a career grand slam winner in Jordan Spieth. It would not shock me in the least bit if Jordan didn’t pull it off. Jordan is playing tremendous golf and he would love to win and complete the grand slam at the young age of 24. This weekend will offer some great golf and is worth tuning into on Sunday afternoon to see who wins it. The Fat Guy is leaning toward Jason Day, only because I love his last name.

Preseason peek at the Lions

The Detroit Lions open up the preseason on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in Indianapolis. The game means nothing. Really; as most of the starters will play the opening series and call it a short afternoon of work. I want to see the draft picks play and see how they handle the NFL game. I think keeping an eye on the running back position is also worth a peek. The Lions need a healthy Ameer Abdullah in 2017. The Lions have to run the football to take pressure off Stafford and the passing game. We all know you need to run the ball late in games to salt away football games in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter. Last season the Lions had numerous wins in the final minute. Let’s be honest. That will not be duplicated again in 2017. I am cautiously optimistic about this 2017 Lions’ football team. It’s getting closer and closer to NFL kick offs and I can’t wait.

Wacky Big Ten scheduling

The college football season is rapidly approaching us. The first three games of the season are on Saturday, August 26. The following Thursday, August 31, three Big Ten teams will be in action. Why is the Big Ten playing a league game on this night? The Ohio State Buckeyes open up with Indiana Hoosiers. I don’t think your first game should be a league game. The Minnesota Golden Gophers and new coach, PJ Fleck, will take on MAC school Buffalo. PJ should know the Buffalo team well since he was the coach at Western Michigan. How about on September 2 Michigan and Florida go head to head? And the Florida State and Alabama game, too! College football comes out of the chute on fire with huge games! thefatguy@mihomepaper
