FLINT TWP. — The Flint Township Board of Trustees approved canceling its May 6 regular meeting in order to give the Clerk’s Department needed time to prepare for the May 7 school election.
Clerk Kathy Funk said that, due to the passage of Proposal 3 last November, the Clerk’s Department has been undergoing many changes.
“There have been a multitude of changes behind the scenes that voters will never see,” she said.
These include working additional office hours during the weekend before the election, mandatory work loading electronic poll books after 4 p.m. on May 6 and beginning work at 5:15 a.m. the day of the election and continuing until the vote totals are delivered to the Genesee County Clerk’s Office.
Funk said her office has already mailed out 1,182 no-reason absentee ballots, and 685 have been returned. She said April 22 is the deadline to register in any manner other than in person and that individuals are now automatically registered to vote when they renew or obtain a driver’s license.
Voter also now may register the day of the election up until 8 p.m.
Funk said they must register in person with either her or her deputy and must have residency verification that shows their name and address, such as a utility bill, paycheck or government check.
