FLINT TWP. — Two township trustees objected to procedures leading to recent appointments to the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Parks and Recreation Commission.
At its Nov. 21 meeting, the township board voted 5-2 to appoint Val Shaheen to the ZBA and Dr. Peter Mikelens to the parks commission.
Trustees Belenda Parker and Barb Vert opposed the appointments citing dissatisfaction with the selection process.
Parker asked why information about the openings was not publicized.
Township Supervisor Karyn Miller said the openings had been announced at the board’s meeting in August.
Parker said that was not enough to give everyone interested an opportunity to apply.
“Other than an announcement at our meeting, I did not see anything on our web site or in the circulating paper in our township,’’ she said.
Miller said that future openings could be handled that way, if so desired.
She said Shaheen has served previously on the zoning board and Mikelens has been a huge volunteer contributor of his time and finances to beautifying the township park.
Vert asked Miller if she had contacted all the people who sent in resumes for the openings.
Miller said some but not all of them because she has resumes dating back to 2009.
Vert, who sits on the parks and rec board, also challenged the timing of Mikelens appointment.
“At our last parks and rec meeting, the decision was that we would discuss the new member at the Dec. 1 meeting and we all agreed to that,” Vert said.
Miller countered that the panel discussed who might be interested in the position but did not vote on delaying a decision until Dec. 1.
She also questioned Vert’s timing asking why she did not raise questions when she received her board packet and saw the names of the recommended appointees.
