Boldin still has skills

Fat Guy Corner

The Buffalo Bills’ season is imploding before the season ever kicks off. Buffalo traded away Sammy Watkins, its No. 1 receiver a week or so ago. The Bills then signed Anquan Boldin. The savvy 14-year veteran would have been a tremendous fit for the Bills. However, after two weeks of training camp, Anquan has decided to retire from the NFL. Anquan signed a one-year deal for $1 million and a signing bonus. I am pretty sure the Bills will want their cheese back, and they should get it back!

Anquan Boldin was one tough receiver and watching him last year as a Detroit Lion was special. I called him Mr. Redzone, as Matt Stafford always located him in the end zone. I think Boldin was never given the respect and admiration he deserved. He tallied up 13,779 yards of receptions which is 14th alltime. Anquan Boldin also caught 1,076 passes, which is ninth in the league all-time. I say to Anquan, what a career in the NFL you had. Enjoy your retirement. I think Anquan will someday be voted into the NFL Hall of Fame. He has Hall of Fame numbers. I really wish the Lions would have signed him to play one more season in Detroit.

Preseason games laughable

The Detroit Lions moved to 2-0 in the preseason with a 16-6 victory over the lowly New York Jets. The game was boring, according to the few people I talked to who watched it. I can honestly say I did not watch it, nor did I care to watch it. The first and second and fourth preseason games are as worthless as a pair of socks with holes in the toes. This preseason football is laughable, if you ask me. There should be two games and that is it. This Friday, one Tom Brady and Company come to Ford Field for a gridiron tussle. The NFL says the third preseason game is a tune up for the regular season. If that saying is true, let’s see what the Kitty Kats do on Friday night. I will have to pass on attending, but hope to catch it on television. I think the fact that Tom Brady is on the Patriots’ squad will draw some fans to Ford Field. The Lions need to put on a good home showing against the New England Patriots to give us some hope for the 2017 regular season. The New England Patriots are the best team in football, as we all know.

Show of support

The Ian Kinsler verbal attack on umpire Angel Hernandez took on a life of its own. MLB came down hard with a serious $10,000 fine against Kinsler. This is a very steep fine in the baseball world of fines. Ian Kinsler told Mr. Hernandez to “find another job” as umpiring should not be his full-time job. The umpires then went to wearing white wristbands as a solidarity protest. The wristbands were to shine attention on the players who verbally abuse umpires. I say that if you stink at your job you should be told you stink at the MLB level of umpiring. These MLB umpires are paid pretty darn good money to get things correct on the diamond. I realize they are human but let’s be honest, some of these umpires are terrible. It will be interesting to see if the fines will stay on the steep side for verbal attacks on the umpires. I bet it will!

Big pay day for fighters

The big dash for cash takes place this Saturday night. What, there is a foot race for cash? No. I am talking about the big showdown fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. This fight is hyped just like the Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather fight was. The results of that fight were boring and not worth the pay-per-view purchase. Manny and Floyd basically stole the money. This fight between McGregor and Mayweather is a straight-out cash grab by both fighters. When I say fighters, I have a tongue in cheek, because McGregor is not even a boxer. Come on man, what a joke! Floyd is an incredible 49-0 in the ring and the ring is his domain in the boxing world. Conor McGregor’s domain is the UFC ring. This fight is a joke, as Mayweather will crush Conor McGregor and I doubt I will watch unless it’s a free watch because I am not going to spend any money to watch this debacle. I learned my lesson after the Pacquiao and Mayweather joke.
