Bowl game predictions

Fat Guy Corner

The New Year of 2022 is about to hit us here in a few short days. What that means is another early deadline for the Fat Guy.

I think we all can say 2021 was a trying year. Let’s collectively say “2021, don’t let the door hit you in the tail and bring on the New Year!”

I stated last week that the pandemic would start affecting the sports world real soon. The NFL took until Tuesday to finish out week 15 of the schedule. I hope the season finishes on time and not with a bunch of depleted football rosters missing key players.

The college bowl season took its first set back as Texas A&M pulled out of its game against Wake Forrest. I feel for both teams but feel real bad for Wake Forrest and its football team.

I really hope there are no more bowl games getting cancelled. The college football playoff games have put protocols in place if a team cannot play. I hope it does not come down to forfeiting a game by any of the four teams. Let’s look at the two playoff games and give out a couple predictions on the two games.

The Goodyear Cotton Bowl at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 will see Alabama and Cincinnati battle for the right to play in the championship game. The Alabama boys are two touchdown favorites to win over the Bearcats of Cincinnati. I think this game comes down to: can the Bearcats defense hold the “Bama” offense from scoring a ton of points. The defensive backs for Cincinnati are really solid and physical. Can the defensive line of Cincinnati apply enough pressure to Bryce Young, the “Bama” quarterback and force hurried throws, is the question? I can tell you this, if there is no pressure than Bryce Young will pick them apart. The Cincinnati offense is reliant on running back Jerome Ford and he needs to have a big day running the football.

I expect Desmond Ridder, the Bearcats quarterback, to play well in this game. Desmond has experience and played in numerous big-time college football games. The coaching advantage is Nick Saban and cannot be overlooked. When he has time to prepare his Alabama football team, Nick almost never loses. What can we expect from coach Luke Fickell on the sidelines in this game? The answer is: nobody knows. I say drumroll please … I see the Crimson Tide winning a tightly contested football game.

Prediction: Saban Again 34 and Great Season Cincy 27. The Orange Bowl kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and will follow the first semi-final game. The Georgia Bulldogs and Michigan Wolverines will vie for a spot in the championship game. The Bulldogs and Wolverines game is a highly-anticipated college football game and will draw huge ratings. These two teams mirror each other as both play really solid defense. The two defenses are tough to run against up front. The Wolverines, as we all know, love to run the football. The question is, can they do that against Georgia? I say, yes and look for Hassan Haskins to get many carries in this football game and be successful doing it. I also know Michigan has one of the best offensive lines in college football and will get the job done. The Michigan O-Line allowed only 10 sacks all season. They also allowed the least amount of tackles for a loss by their opponent. I rate the quarterbacks as even, to be honest. Jim Harbaugh and Kirby Smart, the coaching match up, I call even also. The Fat Guy prediction: Michigan’s Year 20 and Dawg Housed 17.
