FLINT TWP. — It’s the end of days for this 49-year-old Day’s Inn motel (formerly Holiday Inn) on Bristol Road which has been reduced to a pile of rubble, taking with it a bit of colorful history.
It was the site of the legendary birthday party in August 1967 of The Who’s Keith Moon, who was touring with fellow British band Herman’s Hermits, according to various published reports. After a performance at Atwood Stadium, Moon reportedly committed the mother of all room-trashing destruction which some said included a food fight and driving his car into the swimming pool. Moon’s version of the event was retold in an interview with “Rolling Stone Magazine” helping to keep it alive some 40 years later. Only the bar/ restaurant portion of the hotel is still standing.
Owners have indicated interested in turning the vacant lot into a large truck stop or parking lot for truckers and the airport. The restaurant is being updated and is for sale or rent.
Township officials also announced this week that another eyesore — the White House office building, 3255 Beecher Road— has also been razed. Most of that 35,000 square-foot complex was destroyed in a fire about a year ago. — Rhonda Sanders
