FLINT — Two sessions of a 7-week “business startup boot camp” are being held in Flint at Kettering University through the Region 6 office of the Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center (MI-SBTDC).
Designed for early stage or startup businesses, “FastTrac NewVenture” is a licensed business development program created by the Kauffman Foundation. It is being offered statewide by MI-SBTDC and Region 6 in Flint will be offering two sessions of “New Venture”, the first starting on April 26 and the second on September 13.
Classes will meet on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for the 7-week period. Region 6 has been offering this comprehensive training program since early 2009.
For a limited time, MI-SBTDC is able to offer the course at a significantly reduced fee due to the financial support of MSU’s Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) grant award. Instead of a $700 course fee, while the special funding is available the course fee is $140 per person. It includes training sessions, materials and access to FastTrac business tools.
FastTrac courses offer a guided evaluation and planning process to develop a business concept and complete an actionable business plan. In addition to reading and research activities, FastTrac offers experiential learning, opportunities to network with peers, and interact with consultants and guest entrepreneurs.
Other courses in the FastTrac group include “Growth Venture” for established businesses, and “TechVenture” for early stage and startup high-technology businesses. FastTrac New Venture is designed for startup and early stage ventures.
Individuals wishing to participate in FastTrac New Venture must complete two pre-requisites by attending a “Fundamentals of Starting a Business” class and a “FastTrac New Venture Orientation” session. There is no fee for either of the pre-requisite classes.
Due to the interactive nature of the course, FastTrac NewVenture class size in Flint is limited to 24 participants and will be filled “first come, first served” based on date of registration and completion of all prerequisites as of 2 weeks prior to session start.
Schedules and online registration for pre-requisite events as well as FastTrac NewVenture courses, all of which are offered on multiple dates and locations throughout the state, can be found in the SBTDC Training Calendar at www.misbtdc.org. To register for Fast Trac NewVenture and pre-requisite classes in Flint go to www.misbtdc.org, select “Register for Training,” then “SBTDC Training Calendar.” Sort and search by Location, “At Center” and select “MISBTDC Region 6 Office.” For more information or assistance in registering, contact the Region 6 office at 810-762-9660. — G.G.
