The World Series kicked off Tuesday night and it’s two storied franchises with tons of history wanting to win the fall classic: The Boston Red Sox of the American League and the Los Angeles Dodgers of the National League. It’s a tremendous match-up and must-watch television, baseball fans.
The Dodgers went a grueling seven games before disposing of the Milwaukee Brewers from the playoffs. The Red Sox took out the defending World Series champs, the Houston Astros, in a stunning five games. This included winning three straight on Houston’s home field. The Boston team is ripping the cover off the baseball right now and scoring runs. The playoffs have such great pitching, so to hit like the Red Sox, is super impressive.
When I look at these two baseball teams on paper, I give the nod on offense to the Red Sox. The starting pitching nod, however, sides with the Dodgers. I just don’t trust David Price and Chris Sale on the bump for Boston. The Red Sox defense in the outfield is the best in baseball, so the Dodgers taking extra bases will be a chore and risky.
The bullpens I grade as even and both closers are not lights-out closers in my mind. I really believe the fact the Dodgers went to the World Series last year and lost will be a benefit to them this year. The taste of losing and experience should be helpful to the Dodgers. I do caution, though, if the Red Sox stay red hot at the dish (plate) this series could be over in five. The Dodgers really need Clayton Kershaw to be the ace and dominant on the mound, and I think he will. The Red Sox did not win a franchise record 108 games by accident and Fenway is their home-field advantage for sure. The Fat Guy Cheeseball Baseball prediction for the World Series: L.A. Dodgers in an epic seven game series!
Michigan defense stifles State
The Michigan Wolverines dominating the Michigan State Spartans, winning 21-7 in East Lansing last Saturday. The Michigan Wolverines’ defense was stifling, holding MSU to 94 yards of offense. How about MSU putting up only 79 yards of passing and going 0-12 on third downs? That is defensive domination and you just don’t see those type of numbers in today’s college football.
The bragging rights are back in Ann Arbor, along with the Paul Bunyan Trophy. The Michigan Wolverines are on the bye this week and still control their own destiny for the college football playoffs.
The Spartans have to bounce back against a Purdue team that just smoked the Ohio State Buckeyes 49-20. Will MSU catch the Purdue team flat, or will they get a confident Purdue football team? The game is at high noon in East Lansing. The Fat Guy prediction is MSU Rebounders 34 and Boiled Overconfident Purdue 31.
We must be dreaming with Lions
The Lions have pulled to .500 with a 32-21 road win at Miami last Sunday. A fat guy prediction that was on the screws, by the way. The running of Lions’ back Kerryon Johnson for 158 yards was a sight for sore eyes. Is it a dream, or reality, that the Lions have now rushed for over 100 yards by one player twice in the same year? Ripley says believe it, because it’s fact. The Lions netted 248 yards on the ground. Heck, that used to be the total for half the season. Matt Stafford was a solid 18 for 22 and two touchdowns, which is efficient, and I am happy not to see 50 pass attempts a game. The Lions need to take care of business at home against the Seahawks this Sunday. I am going to be in attendance and do not want to see a loss and wreck my Sunday afternoon.
The Lions division is wide open and getting over the .500 mark would be sweet. I do caution that the Kool Aid with Detroit can leave more than red stains around your lips and teeth. The Lions are the biggest wildcard team in football because you never know what you will witness and they let us down time after time. The prediction is: Happy Fat Guy 30 and Seahens by the Seashore 24.
