C-AHS tries new music program fundraiser

FLINT TWP. — Carman-Ainsworth High School is trying out a new fundraiser for its band and instrumental music programs this year.

On June 15, Custom Fundraising Solutions North Detroit will host a mattress sale in the high school gym from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A percentage of every sale goes to the band and instrumental music programs. If people say they were referred by a music student, an additi0nal percentage goes into an individual account for that student to use for band needs.

Custom Fundraising Solutions North Detroit has been holding Mattress Fundraisers for schools and other organizations since 2005. CFS now has more than 70 locations throughout the United States and has given more than $40 million back to communities.

Benjy Jones, director of instrumental music at Carman-Ainsworth, said he had heard about the program from other band directors throughout the state.

“I contacted the Linden director the day they had their sale, and he asked if I’d be interested, so I’ve been thinking about it for a while,” Jones said. “I invited them out to make a presentation, and we decided to give a try. A lot of programs in the area have had quite a bit of success with it. The Linden director said the first year they did it, they raised around $6,500, so there’s a lot of potential there.”

CFS will bring in 20 to 30 sample name brand mattresses, including Simmons and Beautyrest. There will be various sizes and firmness so people can lie on them and try them out. There are different payment options available, including financing and layaway. Buyers order the mattress they want, and the manufacturer will have it ready for delivery in two to three weeks. There is no overhead that comes from working out of a store, so CFS is able to offer quality mattresses at up to 50 percent off of retail prices, and they all come with a manufacturer’s warranty. The sale also will include adjustable beds, box springs, luxury pillows and mattress protectors.

“It doesn’t cost us anything to have them here,” Jones said. “They just ask that we help promote it and get the traffic in there.”

Jones said there are 132 students involved in instrumental music, and last year there were 85 in the marching band. He said most of the funds raised will go to the band to help pay for uniforms, show design, props for the show, pay for marching band staff members and more. He said some of the students will be helping out at the sale with setting up and tearing down, and there are a couple of mattress costumes for students to wear and hold signs to attract attention to the sale.

The referral bonuses for individual students are $25 for one referral, $50 for three, $100 for four, $200 for five and $500 for 10.
