Cavaliers will swim as co-ed team this season

FLINT TWP. – Seven seniors will lead the co-ed varsity swim and dive team at Carman-Ainsworth this winter.

Girls are swimming on the boys’ team because of lack of numbers to field a team in the fall when girls’ traditionally swim. Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) rules allow girls to compete on boys’ teams when they cannot compete in their regular seasons.

Coach Abbey Cowan has 23 swimmers in total and seniors Carson Koegel and Natalie Cook will serve as co-captains. The seven seniors include Koegel, Cook, Aaron Cadarette, Connor Heaton, Shaelyn Maguffee and Katie Speaks.

“We have a co-ed team this year, due to numbers,” said Cownan. “I look forward to Carson Koegel and Natalie Cook leading the team as captains – both are expected to have a fast senior year!

“I expect all of my 23 swimmers to drop time and end the season with better technique and faster times than when they started.”

The Cavaliers open the season on Dec. 8 against Bay City Western and Davison at the Kearsley High pool.
