GENESEE COUNTY — Memorial Day weekend is a great time to celebrate those who have served our country, spend time with friends and family and mark the unofficial start of summer.
Genesee County is filled with family-friendly fun from parades to fireworks and more. Here’s a look at what’s in store.
The Burton Memorial Day Celebration on Monday, May 25 is sure to be a fun filled day for everyone. Betty Bigsby from Burton’s Parks & Rec Department says, “It’s always a family friendly event.” Kicking off the celebration is the Burton Memorial 5K race at 9 a.m. The race takes place at Atherton High School, 3354 S. Genesee Rd.
A parade steps off at 2 p.m. and proceeds south on Center Road. During the late afternoon, between 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Michael Carluccio will perform a three hour concert including songs by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and many others. Take the kids and head to the fun zone where visitors will find bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painting and even balloon twisters. 1yd
Activities continue into the evening at Veteran Memorial Park, located on Center Road. There will be a Veteran Memorial Ceremony and at 9:15 p.m., a candlelight ceremony will be held for fallen veterans. A fireworks display is set for 10 p.m. Details: 810-743-1500.
On Monday, May 25, Davison area veterans of the American Legion, VFW6yd+and AMVET11yrds+ posts host the traditional Memorial Day Parade and ceremonies.
With support from the auxiliary units, Davison High School band and other patriotic organizations, the parade will follow Main Street from the fire station to the Veterans Memorial at the base of the city hall flag pole.
The day’s activities start with the parade at 10:30 a.m., memorial ceremonies with military honors and flag raising outside city hall, 10:45 a.m.- 11:15 a.m. An open house follows at the Davison American Legion post, 10309 Davison Rd (across from the post office), with free hot dogs and refreshments.
The Davison veteran service organizations invite all area veterans to walk with them through the City of Flags — identify yourself with patriotic clothing, service branch ball cap, original uniform items or other veteran paraphernalia.
