FLINT — Building on the 2012 Cinco de Mayo Race, year two will bring more running, more Qdoba, and more sombreros to the Tri To Finish 5k/10k run/walk starting at 9 a.m. May 4 at the Swartz Creek Golf Course/Tavern On The Green, 1902 Hammerburg Rd.
Cinco de Mayo is an observance usually held on May 5 in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
The first 300 race participants will receive a sombrero and don other festive attire to celebrate and welcome spring.
Participants can also enjoy postrace festivities including a delicious Qdoba burrito. Also several hundred adirondack chairs will be waiting for participants as they cross the finish line.
Prizes include $100 for first male and female in the 10K and $50 for first male and female in the 5k.
In lieu of medals this year, the first 500 participants will receive a Boston Marathon Memorial Bracelet where 100% of the purchase price was donated to The One Fund Boston which has been set up to help people most affected by the bombing attack on April 15 at the Boston Marathon in Massachusetts.
The undulating course will take runners and walkers through one of Flint’s most historic neighborhoods . Both the 10k and 5k include several decent climbs and fast downhills.
10k athletes will wind their way through the neighborhood with a few points of repetition. 5k athletes will complete a simple out and back.
A portion of this course is also part of the Crim Road Race course, thereby providing an early training run while enjoying the Cinco de Mayo festivities. For more information or to register, go to www.tritofinish.com/events/11. — R.S.
