BURTON — The city council recognized the winners of the inaugural ‘Twas the Lights Before Christmas decorating contest at its Dec. 21 meeting.
In all, there were 47 entries, which Mayor Duane Haskins called a “phenomenal number” for holding it the first time.
“A lot of residents decorated and there were so many awesome displays,” said Haskins. “The judges made it clear it was the hardest decision they ever had to make. There were so many awesome displays, they said it was very difficult to actually narrow it down and pick one winner.”
Judging was done by five seniors in the community, organized by the Burton Senior Center, and each of the winners received a $25 gift card. The first-place winner received a $100 gift certificate and the Clark W. Griswald (from the movie Christmas Vacation) award.
The seven winners for the individual categories were:
2227 N. Sycamore Dr.
1212 Heritage Lane
2457 N. Vassar Rd.
2299 Fox Run
5482 Statler Dr.
6208 E. Bristol Rd.
The overall first place winner, receiving the Clark W. Griswald award for 2020 and the $100 gift certificate, was 1408 Wells St.
“It was just an awesome to see it, driving around Burton…it was great,” said Haskins. “Next year I’m hoping it will be bigger and better. Something positive that instills the Christmas spirit and the giving in people.”
