City withdraws from bike share

GRAND BLANC — The Grand Blanc City Council has withdrawn from the bike share project.

The company with which the city was working filed bankruptcy, and the company that took over came forward with a different price structure, according to City Manager Wendy Jean-Buhrer.

“So, in the new contract, they want the city to pay $30,000 a year to have these bikes, then the city would keep them,” she said. “We’d set the rental fees, then keep those fees.”

Jean-Buhrer said she and other city employees could not think of “any scenario that we could make more than $30,000 a year. It’s just unreasonable. It’s too much money to put into that kind of program.”

The city has signed no contracts, so there are no penalties for withdrawing. — L.R.
