Clothing from Goodwill to be shown off by Burton Chamber

BURTON
— Fashion and frugality will combine during the Goodwill Fashion show at November’s Burton Chamber of Commerce meeting. The chamber networking breakfast meeting is set for 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10 at the ELGA Credit Union Administration building, 2303 S. Center Rd., and will showcase fashions at a reasonable price from the local Goodwill stores in the area.

Burton has two Goodwill locations, located at 2188 S. Center Rd. and G-3525 S. Saginaw St., which offer casual and dress shirts for men and women, shoes, belts, pants, coats and other clothing items. Residents can make clothing donations at drop-off centers at VG’s Food Center, 8503 Davison Rd. in Davison; Missing Sock Coin Laundry, 9220 Lapeer Rd. in Davison; Porter Place, 2219 E. Hill Rd. in Grand Blanc; and Kroger, 7084 Miller Rd. in Swartz Creek.

The fashion show will feature city officials, as well as members from local businesses showing off in outfits created from items available on racks inside local Goodwill retail stores. In 2009, Burton Mayor Charles Smiley, ELGA Credit Union Business and Community Manager Cheryl Sclater and others showed off the clothing. Aside from providing clothing inside their stores, one local Goodwill location, 501 S. Averill Ave., is pushing efforts to become more earth aware.

The cafeteria at the Flint store has made a move from using Styrofoam and paper products to glass and ceramic dishware. The move is expected to conserve money, energy, resources and space. Dishware comes mainly from donations sanitized to Health Department standards.

Goodwill Industries of Mid-Michigan, which operates 14 retail stores in Bay City, Clio, Burton, Flint, Birch Run, Fenton, Imlay City, Lapeer, Holly, Owosso, Midland, Oxford and Saginaw helped save 4,772,798 pounds of textiles from going into landfills in 2009, while also saving 100,874 pounds of paired shoes, 362,660 pounds of cardboard, 555,625 pounds of books, 218,051 pounds of toys, 1,300,000 pounds of computers through the Dell Reconnect Program, and 623,510 pounds of metal from being disposed of as waste in garbage dumps. Businesses can sponsor Chamber of Commerce monthly events, like the Goodwill fashion show, for as little as $50 by contacting 810-513-9996, while networking admission price to the chamber events is free.
