Here I sit on Saturday morning sipping on my hot coffee and hating these early holiday deadlines. The college football scene is huge today, as the semifinal playoffs are in action today. I will give you my predictions and by time you read this next week, we shall see if I was right or wrong!
The first game is Oklahoma and LSU. The boys from LSU are two-touchdown favorites to advance to the college finals. The Oklahoma Sooners are in their fourth playoff and the first three times ended up in losses. The daunting task of beating LSU and quarterback Joe Burrow are not good, either. The LSU Tigers have a banged up running back in Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who will be a game-time decision. The Oklahoma defense cannot stop LSU in this contest, in my opinion. I like the Tigers over the Sooners in a highscoring game. LSU 41 and Oklahoma 27.
The night game is so intriguing between Ohio State and Clemson. I literally cannot wait for this football game to kick off. I think these two teams are even on paper and will come down to the fourth quarter to decide the winner. This is Clemson’s fifth straight college playoff trip, so experience is on their side. The Ohio State Buckeyes are a tremendous football team! I am worried that Ohio State quarterback, Justin Fields, is not one hundred percent with his knee. He says it’s around 85 percent. The Clemson quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, is one smooth dude and won this thing against Alabama last year. The prediction is: Clemson Tigers 30 and Ohio State 27.
The Michigan State Spartans made my last week’s prediction look good! I said MSU 27-20 over Wake Forrest and the final ended up MSU 27-21! The Spartans moved the ball offensively and also scored on a fluke pick-six defensively. The first half had scoring and the second half was a defensive battle. The MSU win finished the Spartans’ season at 7-6 in a year that was a struggle for coach Dantonio’s football team. Let’s hope next year is a better year for the Spartans on the football field.
Eagles fly to win
The Quick Lane bowl was a tough loss for the Eastern Michigan team, as it lost in the final minutes 34-30 to Pitt. The sad part is EMU held the lead for the entire football game! A tough loss, but a tremendous effort by Eastern Michigan. The Eastern Michigan program has turned into a good one and is trending upward.
The Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1, actually yesterday by the time you read this, will have Michigan and Alabama hooking up on the football field. Will Alabama be motivated to play Michigan? The Crimson Tide is usually playing in the college football playoffs and not a lower tier bowl game. I am not even sure Michigan will be motivated after suffering another crushing loss to hated Ohio State in the season’s final game. The Wolverines no-showed in last year’s bowl game against the Florida Gators. I feel as though coach Jim Harbaugh needs a signature win against a top program like Alabama. The fact is, he was brought to Michigan to play and win these type of games and it has not happened. The Alabama team is starting a second-string quarterback so Michigan should have the advantage at that position. How do I see this game? Here is my prediction: Alabama 31 and Michigan 30. Yes, another loss for Jimmy in a big game.
Still woefull Lions
The Detroit Lions’ season ended on Sunday after this column went to press against Green Bay and to that, a big thumbs up. How many of these dismal seasons should a fan base endure in their life time? The answer is, we Lions fans have passed our quota! The excitement of Matt Patricia coming back has the rabid fan base in total jubilation! I say a root canal is jubilation over Pencil Head coming back! email@example.com
