Acrylic paint workshop at Boundless Arts

GRAND BLANC — Mary Beth Schiros will present “Expand Your Horizon With Acrylic Painting” at Boundless Arts, 12235 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc, on Oct. 2 from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. This workshop will present an overview of acrylic paints and mediums, such as gesso, grounds, pouring and glazing mediums.

Local artist Mary Beth Schiros will discuss the advantages of using acrylics vs. other paints, and special techniques applicable only to the acrylic medium. The workshop will begin with demonstrations followed by handson experimentation by the participants.

Spiritual development workshops

MOUNT MORRIS — A series of spiritual development workshops will be held Oct. 16 and 30 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. On Oct. 16 the workshop will be at the Spiritualist Episcopal Church, 610 Clinton St., in Owosso. On the 30th the workshop will be at the Spiritualist Episcopal Church, 6577 Garden St., Mt. Morris. The cost is $20 and there will be a 15 minute reading given as a door prize. The workshops will also feature a luncheon and live music.

Search for 2011 Michigan Apple Queen begins

STATEWIDE — The search for the 2011 Michigan Apple Queen is officially underway, with applications now available from the Michigan Apple Committee.

Candidates must be between the ages of 17 and 23 and have a connection to the Michigan Apple industry.

Contestants will compete in a pageant on Dec. 7 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids during the Great Lakes Fruit and Vegetable Expo.

A panel of judges ranks each contestant on poise, professionalism and apple industry knowledge. The young lady earning the highest score will be crowned queen and participate in various parades, festivals and events as an ambassador of the Michigan Apple industry. The winner receives a modest scholarship.

FLINT — “The Sweet Side” is a display at the Sloan Museum, 1221 E. Kearsley St., about the history of candy shops, bakeries and “sweet” shops in Flint. Even adults feel like kids in a candy shop, so the exhibit is for all ages.

GENESEE COUNTY — Genesee County Parks is looking for large and small groups of people who are used to working together. Whether it’s volunteering at Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad during Day Out With Thomas, creating gift bags for an upcoming event at the Parks Administration Office or working on the flowerbeds at For- Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum, there are a variety of volunteer opportunities at Genesee County Parks.

If your company or organization has a volunteer hour requirement, there is no other place as fun as the Genesee County Parks to log your hours. Volunteers truly are the heart of Genesee County Parks.
