Community rallies after fire destroys home of Lennon councilman, chamber president

LENNON — David Mayers has given so much to the Lennon and Swartz Creek communities, so it was no surprise that the communities rallied to his aid in time of need.

Mayers and his family lost their home and all of their belongings in a fire Wednesday, March 31.

Mayers owns DJ Mayers Computer Repair, 3927 S. Sheridan Road in Clayton Township, and serves as president of the Swartz Creek Area Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Village of Lennon Volunteers, member of the Lennon village council, chairman of the Department of Public Works Committee, president of the business networking group Table Talk, member of the Flushing Chamber of Commerce, and treasurer of his church.

His efforts have supported the Old Newsboys, the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and many other organizations.

Mayers said he, his wife and son are doing okay, but they’re looking at about a year before their lives are back to something resembling normal. They are currently staying at a hotel and searching for temporary housing while they work with the insurance company and prepare to rebuild.

“Everyone got out safe, that’s the important thing,” Mayers said.

The fire started in or near the electrical panel on the outside of the house, he said.

“My son had just left the house and walked right by that side of the house,” Mayers said. “After my son left, my wife let the dog in and was cooking and heard a popping noise. She looked outside and saw flames, then came back to look for the dog and call 911.”

Meanwhile, a mile away at Mayers’ shop, he was explaining the day’s to-do list to his son when he got the call.

“My wife said the house was on fire,” Mayers said. “She said it three times. I kept asking, ‘what?’ I couldn’t comprehend it. It didn’t make sense. My son was just there five minutes earlier.”

The next several minutes were agonizing, waiting for the fire department to arrive and watching the flames race up and across the 1.5-story home on Lennon Road.

The devastating loss continues to sink in, but the family is coping as well as can be expected.

Several chamber members and residents have taken up collections of money and gift cards for restaurants, gas, Sam’s Club and Meijer.

Anyone wishing to assist the Mayers family may do so online through the Lennon Wesleyan Church at Be sure to indicate that the donation is intended for David Mayers and his family.

There is also a collection jar at the Lennon library.
