FLINT TWP. — The township board approved a proclamation adding its congratulation to the Flint Community Players which will begin its 90th season of providing quality amateur theater starting September 13.
The group requested a proclamation to be read at its opening show which will be the timeless musical “Gypsy.”
The resolution highlights some of the milestones in FCP’s history including the first performance on June 27, 1929 under the name The Theater Guild of Flint and in 1958 becoming a tenant of the F.A. Bower Theater in the Flint College and Cultural Center where it remained more than 50 years.
FCP has continued to produce five shows a year during its regular season since World War II including a children’s show and a summer musical; has presented shows at schools and various other facilities throughout Flint and maintained active involvement in the community by sponsoring Young Adult Theater and Explorer Scout Troops, providing educational programs, Reader’s Theater, vintage fashion shows and costume rental services.
FCP have won numerous awards for theatrical production and community involvement.
FCP moved in 2012 to is current headquarters at 2462 S. Ballenger Hwy. FCP started out on the site in one small room – a former transmission shop – donated by arts supporter Bill Ballenger. Expansions have been done since to completely house everything under one roof including ticket sales, concessions, performances and back of the house functions such as costuming and props. The 2012 expansion added a 30-foot marquee sign out front to promote events, three spacious dressing rooms and a flexible staging area to accommodate different types of presentations.
