Congrats to the Baylor Bears, Tiger’s opening day and a Masters prediction

The Baylor Bears are 2020/21 college basketball champions. What can you say about the whipping the Bears put on the Gonzaga Bulldogs? The final score of 86-70 is closer than the domination Baylor gave Gonzaga on the hardwood. When I saw Baylor hit their first five three balls, I quickly knew the “Zags” where in for a long night of hoop!

The Bears dismantled the Houston Cougars on Saturday night winning 78-59 and I believe it helped Baylor on Monday night. The Houston team never pushed Baylor and Baylor was in cruise control the entire way.

I will say, the same cannot be said for Gonzaga. The UCLA Bruins took the “Zags” to overtime before losing on a buzzer beater off the backboard. Lucky shot. Let’s call it what it was — a lucky shot. I felt sick for those UCLA kids to be totally honest, to lose that way. I do believe the overtime game took its toll on Gonzaga physically and emotionally. The Gonzaga team looked tired and drained Monday night. However, take nothing away from Baylor, they were absolutely the better basketball team from tip to finish!

The 1976 Indiana Hoosiers are still the last team to go undefeated the entire season. The Gonzaga Bulldogs were one win away from ending that streak.

I say to all who’s brackets were winners, congrats. The fat guy brackets were oh-so-close to winning some cabbage but like the “Zags,” I fell a little short.

I want to say congrats to Juan Howard on being named college basketball coach of the year also. The job Juan did with Michigan this season was a spectacular.

The Detroit Tigers were an Opening Day success with a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians. I ask, was it cold at Comerica and snowy? Yes, it was. The Miggy home run in the snow was a classic. When Miggy lost sight of the ball and slid into second base not realizing it landed in the seats was priceless. The Tigers are playing 500 baseball here in the first week of the season. We must mention the home run hit by Akil Baddoo on the first pitch in his first MLB at bat! Wow, talk about a lifetime of memories on one swing of the bat! I tip my fork to you young man!

The New York Jets have traded Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers. The Carolina Panthers basically got him for two ham and cheese sandwiches and a plate of French fries. Sam Darnold was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 draft. He was dealt for sixth round pick this year and a second and fourth round pick in 2022.

I will say that is a steal for Carolina if Darnold’s change of uniforms helps him become a better quarterback. The Jets cleared cap space and I believe will select BYU’s Zach Wilson with their No. 2 overall pick this season. I never liked Sam Darnold out of USC and he did nothing to prove me wrong. He was terrible in the green and white as quarterback of the Jets.

The Deshaun Watson alleged sexual assault and inappropriate behavior numbers keep growing. I think Deshaun Watson’s decision whether to play in Houston or to sit out the year have become the least of his worries. It will be an interesting watch to see how this all plays out, so stay tuned.

The Masters is here this weekend and Dustin Johnson is the defending champion. The honorary starter ceremony will be at 7:45 a.m. as Jack Nickaus, Gary Player and Lee Elder will do the honors. Lee Elder was the first black golfer to compete in the Masters. I absolutely love watching the Masters on Sunday afternoon as it always seems to have drama. I know Dustin ran away with it last year and there was zero drama. The fat guy prediction: I am taking the bombing machine Bryson DeChambeau.
