SWARTZ CREEK — Cornerstone Baptist Church, which is located at 6273 Miller Road in Swartz Creek, will begin phase one of a two-phase planned expansion of the church facilities this spring.
With phase one, the church will add 12,000 square feet to its existing facilities, which will include the expansion of the church gymnasium, 12 new multispace rooms, a bookstore, library and coffee shop.
“It doesn’t look like a big project, but the more we looked at it, it will be an expansive project to accomplish,” said Chris Yager, the pastor at the Cornerstone Baptist Church.
The phase one construction is scheduled to begin at the end of March or the beginning of April.
“That’s when the weather’s going to be good enough,” Yager said.
With the expansion of the gymnasium, the church will knock out an existing wall and add bleachers to the gym.
“We’ll put stands in so we can use that,” Yager said.
The 12 new rooms will be used for offices, Sunday school classroom space and meeting rooms.
“They will be multi-space rooms for anything the ministry needs,” Yager said.
Yager said the bookstore and coffee shop will be a place people can go during the day or after a service to get a coffee and have a place to purchase a book. He said the new library will offer people a place to read.
“It will be a Christian library where people can come in and enjoy and have a good, quiet place to do that,” Yager said.
Yager said the church is expanding its existing facilities this spring because they have run out of space.
“We’ve used up all our classrooms,” he said. “We are holding classes in the gym and having classes use rooms that were purposed for something else.”
The new 12,000 square foot expansion will be added to the west side of the existing facilities, and the construction is scheduled to be completed in October of 2013.
“We should get our occupancy at that time,” Yager said.
Further, Yager said the church has plans for a phase two expansion that should occur within the next 5-7 years and will include a new 1,200 seat sanctuary with an upstairs mezzanine, new classrooms, a new entrance and foyer as well as an expanded parking lot.
The phase two construction project is expected to add another 29,000 square feet to the facilities.
“It’s going to be a big building,” Yager said.
Cornerstone Baptist Church has been located at its current Miller Road site since 1987 and has seen expansion projects in 1990-91 and again in 1997. The existing facilities is about 45,000 square feet.
