GENESEE COUNTY — The Genesee County Board of Commissioners presented a proclamation to the family of Bill Wilson to honor his memory by declaring Sept. 10, as Genesee County Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Day.
Wilson took his own life in June of this year. To help others that may be struggling with thoughts of suicide, the Wilson family decided to honor Bill by raising money for the Michigan Association for Suicide Prevention.
To date they have raised more than $26,000.
Suicides have been on the rise in recent years, increasing nearly 40 percent since 1999. In 2016, more than 1,300 people committed suicide in Michigan. Nationally, someone commits suicide every 12 minutes.
Commissioner Drew Shapiro, the sponsor of this resolution, said, “We should do everything we can to raise awareness about this very serious public health issue. If we can direct just one person to the resources that will help them, we have been successful.” — G.G.
