FLINT TWP. — On July 6, Flint Township firefighters put out a structure fire at the Randy Wise Auto Mall on 4350 Lennon Road.
At around 7:30 p.m., fire crews arrived at the Flint Township dealership to find dark smoke and visible flames billowing out of the bay doors of the building’s service garage. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire before it could spread to other parts of the building.
Flint Township Fire Chief Tom Stadler said that the garage area sustained heavy smoke and heat damage, but the showroom was undamaged and only impacted by light smoke. No one was in the building at the time.
Investigators determined that a vehicle parked in the service area for repairs was the source of the fire.
“Because of the heavy smoke, it took us a while to locate how the fire started in the building,” Stadler said. “Once we extinguished the fire, we found a vehicle that had been completely destroyed. It was in to be repaired for serious electrical issues.”
Stadler said that multiple vehicles in the garage also sustained heat damage.
Just a few minutes before the call came in from the Randy Wise Auto Mall, Flint Township firefighters responded to a structure fire at a home on Diamond Avenue. Stadler said that he had to split his crew between both scenes, with half containing the fire at Diamond Avenue and the rest responding to the scene at the dealership.
“It was a busy day for our crews,” Stadler said. “They worked very hard in hot conditions.”
Stadler said that the structure fire on Diamond Avenue started in a garage area and caused damage to the home, a shed and two other nearby houses. No one was injured in that fire.
Fire crews with the Swartz Creek, Mundy Township, Grand Blanc Township, Mt. Morris Township and Flushing fire departments assisted the Flint Township Fire Department with containing the fire at the Randy Wise Auto Mall.
