— Approximately 100 community members got a head start on their Christmas shopping during Madge and Gert’s Festive Friday event held Nov. 12 at UAW Local 659, 4549 Van Slyke Rd.

Founded by Heidi Seman, a Grand Blanc resident and creator of Madge and Gert Soy Candles, the annual event featured approximately 30 vendors from Genesee County, and included Madge and Gert Soy Candles, Tastefully Simple, Miche Bags, Hilltop Soaps, Alma Hill Breads, Silpada, Tupperware, Hot Mama’s Salsa, Ladybug Bow-tique, MAM Designs, Switch Bakery and Queen of Nostalgia.

In addition to the variety of vendors to choose from, attendees received a special gift bag containing giveaways and coupons that were good at vendors’ booths during the event. When they weren’t shopping, attendees were able to let loose and have some fun at the Silly Picture corner, which was ran by photographer Carla Spahnie, who also is the co-creator of Alma Hill Breads.

With the economy still being a driving force behind sales at special events, Seman said this year’s attendance was down from last year, “but no different than what I’ve seen across the board at almost every event I’ve been at this year.”

“Some vendors say sales were up, some say sales were down,” she said.
