Davenport seeking help for 9-11 Day of Service Event

FLINT TWP. — A 9-11 Day of Service Care Package Drive being hosted by Davenport University, 4318 Miller Rd., is under way and will culminate with distribution to past and present military members and a special commemorative program.

The purpose of the event is to show support and appreciation to deployed troops and military veterans from this region, according to a press release.

On Sept. 1, Davenport students and volunteers began collecting items for the care packages that will include soap, body wash, Kleenex, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hand sanitizer, candy (non-melting), beef jerky, fruit snacks, chewing gum, granola bars, trail mix, books, movies, footballs, soccer balls, international phone cards and more.

Donations are being accepted at Davenport through Sept. 11.

Volunteers also are being sought to help sort and package the items between noon and 4 p.m. on Sept. 11. Light refreshments and raffle prizes will be offered to volunteers throughout the day, according to Anjanette Day of Davenport Student Life. Volunteers are asked to call Wilma Mitchell at 810-396-3635 to sign up.

The agenda for the Day of Service Program begins at noon with a welcome and a moment of silence at the flagpole. A brief commemorative program from 1:30 – 2:15 p.m. will include a presentation on Emergency Preparedness, an expression of appreciation to First Responders in the community and a poetry reading by veteran Stan the Man.

Students and volunteers will work on bundling collected items into individual care packages from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and from 2-4 p.m. Hand-written thank-you notes will be included in each package. Day of Service is a flexible drop-in event to allow donors and volunteers to participate at their convenience. —
