DAVISON TWP. — When Davison Township Parks and Recreation was forced to close many of its facilities and activities because of the coronavirus, the staff started to not only think outside the box – they made it a point to just think outside.
Casey Reed, director of the Davison Township Parks and Recreation, said her staff is working on ideas to get people out into the parks, while maintaining social distancing, despite having to close Lake Callis and the Dog Park during the shutdown.
This led to the township’s first ever Virtual 5K. Parks and Rec are teaming up with Remax Edge of Davison and Children’s Miracle Network to complete a Virtual 5K where participants can choose to walk, run, or hike their 5K wherever they feel comfortable.
Reed said the township had plans for a Slime Me Davison fun run with the Festival of Flags this year, but with the indefinite postponement of the festival due to coronavirus, Reed said the DTPR wanted to do something else to help the Children’s Miracle Network.
“We thought we would try this,” she said. “It’s easier, because we don’t have to figure out a course or recruit volunteers.”
Those taking part in the Virtual 5K can complete the run or walk anytime between June 1-30. Reed said the race is based on the honor system.
Participants are urged to take a picture and post it on the Davison Township Parks and Recreation Facebook event page for fun to let everyone know when they’ve completed their 5K. Each participant will receive a T-shirt with registration. $10 from every registration fee will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network.
Reed said if you choose to race, participants are urged to take part out only if they are feeling healthy and they must follow all State and CDC recommendations for Social Distancing.
Early registration will be accepted until May 29, late registration will start on May 30, with a $2 added late fee. All registration will commence for the virtual 5K on June 19.
Early registration T-Shirts will be available for pick-up June 3 from 10 a.m.– 2 p.m. and June 4 from 4-6 p.m.
Late registration individuals will be notified for shirt pick up dates and times.
Pick up will be at the Davison Township Parks Office (1152 N. Gale Rd., Davison). Curbside pickup. Please do not exit vehicles.
Fee: Early Registration: Residents – $20 per person; non-residents – $23 per person. Late Registration: Residents – $22 per person; non-residents – $25 per person.

Reed said Davison Township Parks and Recreation are working on other ways to make some of its programs available to residents to do from the safety of their homes. She said by the end of this week, the DTPR should have links to Camps in a Box, which is essentially everything parents would need to have their kids do day camp activities at home.
“We pack everything for you and a week before the camp you come pick up a box with what you need inside,” said Reed. “That should be on our website by the end of (this) week.”
