GRAND BLANC – Dort Federal Credit Union installed a “Free Little Library” book house inside of Berston Field Hous, Jan. 8.

The Flint Area Credit Unions received a grant from the Michigan Credit Union Foundation to help promote literacy in Genesee and Shiawassee counties. The Genesee Career Institute Construction Trades built the twelve book houses. Mott Community College Fabrication Lab made the signage for the “Free Little Libraries” to be installed in area parks.

What makes the Berston Field House “Free Little Library” unique is the fact that it is indoors. The other credit union sponsored houses are installed outdoors on a sturdy post. Dort Federal Credit Union had to coordinate with Genesee Career Institute Construction Trades, instructor Craig Sweesy and his students, to build a special table for the book house to sit on. The employees of Dort Federal Credit Union will be responsible to replenish the books.

Children may take a book to read and when they are finished they are encouraged to return the book. Each child is asked to initial the inside cover creating a history of how many children read and shared a book. “This truly speaks to the credit union spirit of cooperation and our philosophy of People Helping People” said Vicki Hawkins, President and CEO of Dort Federal Credit Union.
