Down the stretch they come

Fat Guy Corner

The American League Central is an absolute roller coaster ride that not even Cedar Point can match!

One week it’s the Kansas City Royals who are red hot. The next week the Tigers get red hot. Who knows from week to week what’s going to happen in this division?

Kansas City rolled into Detroit a week ago and looked like it was going to take charge of the American League Central. KC went home and lost three straight to the Seattle Mariners. The Tigers go on the road to Cleveland, a place they lost three straight just three weeks ago, and sweep the Indians. It’s head-scratching material, to say the least.

I will not lie, I thought the Detroit Tigers would run away with this division. I can tell you with three months of baseball left in this season that is not going to happen. The Royals are going to battle out the Tigers for the division for the rest of the summer.

The boys from Kansas City have good enough starting pitching and a fabulous bullpen to go with it. How do we, as fans, like our Detroit Tigers bullpen? It stinks, to be as blunt as blunt can be. Once again, as in the past three decades, the closer position is brutal and awful. Joe Nathan will lose at least seven to 10 more games in the ninth inning. Trust me on that one. He only throws the fastball up there at a paltry 92-93 miles per hour. He walks lead-off hitters and then walks more hitters. It’s plain brutal to watch.

If Detroit makes the postseason, and that is not a given, Tiger fans, I can totally see the bullpen blowing crucial October Playoff Baseball wins. The thought of the David Ortiz home run is still fresh in the memory bank in my head. The positive side is the Tigers have two guys on the roster who are an awesome 1-2 punch. The combo of Miggy and V-Mart are worth the watch every single night the Tigers play baseball. What these two players do on a nightly basis should be baseball criminal. I say this to Tigers fans, hold on because the summer is going to be a topsy-turvy ride all summer long. Let’s all hope that come October the Detroit Tigers are on the topsy and not the turvy side of things.

Looking for a hero

The NBA Draft is Thursday and the excitement for the Detroit Piston fans is an absolute zero! The Pistons have no first round pick this year. The Charlotte Hornets/ Bobcats/ Hornets have our pick. The Ben Gordon deal still haunts Detroit!! The ill-fated Ben Gordon deal, as I repeat myself over and over.

That was a stellar move by ex-general manager Joe Dumars. Wow is the word to describe it.

Detroit does have a second round selection and the rumor is if shooter Joe Harris is still available that might be the Pistons’ selection. Joe Harris is from Virginia and was a four-year starter for the Cavaliers. Ben Gordon costs the Pistons the No. 9 pick. Just unbelievable! The rest of the NBA draft will be a good watch on Thursday night. I know I will be watching. Who will go number one to the Cleveland Cavaliers?

Different kind of ride

The World Cup soccer game between USA and Portugal was a game for the ages. USA and Portugal played to a 2-2 tie. USA held a 2-1 lead late after the 90 minutes of soccer action. The game went to a plus five. That means they added five minutes more to the soccer match. Portugal took advantage and scored with just seconds left. Victory was snatched from the USA with that late goal. USA now plays Germany today at high noon. The USA controls its own destiny for moving on to the next round. If the USA can just play Germany to a draw or beat Germany, it moves into the next round. Come on, USA, it would be nice to see you move on in this World Cup 2014.
