Dumping ground changed for residents

FLINT TWP. — Residents now have a new place to take a dump.

Once-a-month free dumping privileges have been arranged with Brent Run Landfill, 8335 Vienna Rd. in Montrose Township.

The change was necessitated by a change in ownership of Flint Township’s garbage service provider.

Since January 2011 garbage pickup services has been provided by Richfield Management LLC which went well until the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September of this year.

Richfield’s waste collection division, serving about 10 municipalities in Genesee County, recently was sold to Emterra Environmental USA, which took over operations in mid-November.

Soon after, township officials began receiving complaints from residents being turned away from the Richfield Landfill in Davison Township where they have previously received free dumping privileges once a month, under the township’s contract with Richfield. That contract does not expire until Dec. 31, 2014 and Emterra management has said all Richfield services would remain unchanged under its ownership.

A letter sent to residents about a week ago introduced Emterra to residents and explained its services but did not mention dumping privileges.

Township officials contacted lawyers to resolve the situation.

At the township board meeting Monday night. Supervisor Karyn Miller read a letter from Emterra general manager Etienne Paradis, outlining a solution.

“Emterra does not own Richfield Landfill in Richfield Township,’’ the letter stated. “The landfill has not been purchased and is currently closed. For this reason, your residents will not be able to dump for free at Richfield Landfill.”

The letter further said that arrangements to maintain dumping privileges had been made with Brent Run Landfill. For now residents will be allowed to dump once per month in the residential dumping areas by showing their driver’s license. Later they will be able to show their license or pick up a dumping pass at the township hall.

Miller said the township is having its attorney look over Emterra’s proposal to make sure it is acceptable.

“We have not signed anything,’’ she said of the changed terms.

Brent Run Landfill, which is located between Elms and McKinley Roads, is open from 6 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday – Friday and 6 a.m.-10 a.m. on Saturday, according to its web site. It is closed on major holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
