View Newspapers: Here Today — And Here Tomorrow

The big news in newspapering in the greater Flint area late last week — Booth Newspapers’ announcement of its plans to discontinue the company’s Flint suburban weekly papers early next year — understandably has left both local readers and advertisers scratching their heads wondering where and how they fit into Booth’s plans.

Here at the View Newspaper Group, we can only state our intentions to stay firmly committed to the communities we serve. That commitment is the same as it has been since we launched our first community newspaper, The Lapeer Area View, more than eight years ago: Package the best local news, local sports reporting and local community events coverage with affordable advertising rates and deliver it to the mailboxes of readers faithfully every week.

And deliver it we do! Our Grand Blanc View, Burton View, Davison Index, Swartz Creek View and Flint Township View local weekly newspapers are delivered to more than 70,000 homes every week in Genesee County, plus more than 34,000 homes in Lapeer

Our editorial and sports content is local for each paper. If you live in Flint Township, The Flint Township View brings you coverage of Flint Township’s events, your team’s sports action and news about your neighbors. That same local coverage goes for all our papers. We live and work in these communities. We work on the fundraisers, stand in the rain to cover the big Friday night football games, keep an eye on the local governments, celebrate the accomplishments of our fellow citizens and partner with local businesses to help the local economy. We are your true locally owned and operated hometown newspapers.

Advertisers have the option of keeping their advertising message close to home with their local View paper, or broadcasting their ads via all of our Genesee County View papers — and beyond if they need it.

Part and parcel of being in the newspaper business these days is fielding the questions that arise when yet another daily paper posts faltering circulation numbers, cuts days of home delivery, guts its newsroom and announces its next great plan to conquer the internet: “ What about you guys? Are you going down, too”? The answer for us is simple: “No, we are not going away.”

The View Newspaper Group has steadily and successfully grown our business model since its inception more than eight years ago. We publish a total of 12 weekly, and one twice-weekly, publications in Genesee, Saginaw, Lapeer, Sanilac and Huron counties. Our printed publications will continue to arrive each week in your mailbox, and you can find our papers online and on your smart phone at www.mihomepaper.com.

Our approach may not be as fancy or as fanciful as the daily newspapers’ attempts to recapture its bored and alienated readers, but our approach is effective. See you next week, and the week after that, and the week after that, and — well, you get the idea. — Wes Smith, publisher
