FLINT TWP. — On Tuesday, December 19, at approximately 10:15 pm, Flint Township Police officers were dispatched to the 4400 block of Lennington Ct. for a medical emergency. Officers arrived on scene and found a deceased male, Leonid Yufa, a 79-year-old Flint Township resident, inside his apartment. Yufa’s death was investigated as a homicide due to foul play that was evident at the scene. Accordingly, the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory assisted investigators on scene with evidence collection. It is believed at this time Mr. Yufa died as a result of asphyxiation.
Flint Township Police detectives spent numerous hours investigating this matter and developed a person of interest. On Thursday, December 21, Dmitri Zavalnitski, a
32-year-old resident of Flint Township, was arrested and lodged at the Genesee County
Jail. On Friday December 22, the case was presented to the Genesee County Prosecutor and the following charges were authorized: Homicide- Felony Murder, Home Invasion 1st degree, Possession of Burglary Tools, Home Invasion 2nd degree, and Possession of Marijuana. Mr. Zavalnitski has been arraigned on these charges in the 67th District Court.
