Election signage ordered to handle high voter turnout

FLINT TWP. – Township Clerk Kim Courts has ordered new election signs to be placed outside of polling places to better direct voters and campaigners in the August and November elections where high voter turnouts are anticipated.

Election signs and supplies costing $2,543.62, after a five percent discount, are being ordered from Election Source of Grand Rapids.

Signs designating 100-feet and 20-feet outside of polling places are needed to mark off areas for campaigning (100 feet) and exit pollsters (20 feet, Courts said. She ordering four each of the 100-foot and 20-foot signs, costing $55 each.

Also on order are eight custom “Vote Here” reflective face signs costing $50 each. The white signs with reflective “VOTE HERE” lettering will make it easier for voters to see the polling locations during early morning and late evening hours when visibility is hampered by darkness, Courts said.

Courts also is purchasing custom roll-up precinct banners to be used at the two busiest polling locations – Our Lady of Lebanon Catholic Church and West Flint Church of the Nazarene. Costing $1,350 each, the banners will be displayed next to the precinct, making it easier for voters to identify his or her precinct within the polling place.

“We are expecting a high voter turn-out during the August and November elections and the precinct banners will aid in crowd control,” Courts said. Also, because of the higher turnout, Courts is ordering about 50 secrecy sleeves at a cost of $187.50 each. It has been several years since secrecy sleeves have been purchased and many need to be replaced due to wear and tear, she said.

The Flint Township Election Commission unanimously approved the expenditures earlier this month, Courts said. – Rhonda Sanders
