ATLAS TWP. — Voters in Atlas Township’s Precinct 2 will have another new polling place for the November general election.
Precinct 2 voters, who generally comprise the northeast quadrant of the township, will cast their ballots at Creekside Acres Event Barn on M-15.
Previously, those residents voted at The River Church on Perry Road. However, this year, the elections conflicted with church programs, according to Atlas Township Clerk Katie Vick.
For the August primary election, Precinct 2 was set up at Goodrich Middle School.
“If there is a place that’s a non-profit type of business that we can utilize, we needed to do that versus using a vendor, like a wedding hall,” said Vick. “We needed to stick with places like churches, schools, township-owned property.”
Use of the event center is allowed if all other options are exhausted, she said.
“The school would have had to have an in-service day and rearrange their schedules, so it was not a feasible option for a permanent precinct,” Vick said.
The township doesn’t have a lot of options that would accommodate that many people and their vehicles.
Vick said she expects some voters will be confused over where to go to cast their ballots in November, but the township will place signage directing them to the proper location.
“We are all within a mile, so it shouldn’t inconvenience anyone too much,” she said.
